Fancy a brushed titanium turbo heat shield for your engine bay? Of course you do. NM’s new TitaNM turbo heat shield is designed to redirect heat from the turbocharger down and around the engine. Superchips Ltd, has announced a new performance ECU upgrade for the R56 Cooper S. Designed to significantly enhance the performance of the Cooper S’s 1.6-litre, twin scroll turbocharged, direct injection motor, intensive analysis of the car’s advanced MED17 engine management system by in-house technicians pinpointed a number of areas that required fine tuning. The end result of this process is a thoroughly tested ECU remap which optimises ignition timing, fueling and turbo boost parameters and was validated using Superchips chassis dynomometer, allied to a comprehensive road testing program. Peak power increases by 20 bhp at peak (up to 195 bhp from a measured 175 bhp,) with an extra 22 bhp in the mid range. Torque leaps from a measured 256Nm (187lb.ft) to a healthy 282Nm (206lb.ft,) with well over 250Nm (183lb.ft) available from 2500 rpm to 5250 rpm. Designed for use with regular 95 octane petrol and covered by Superchips 12-month warranty, the new performance ECU is available now by visiting one of approximately 100 Superchips dealerships in the UK who will install the upgrade. 05/02/10 - Big disks from Lohen

New from Lohen this month are these replacement discs which are specifically for the AP Racing 1-piece big brake kit and will not fit the standard Mini calipers or any other big brake kit and are 304 mm x 24 mm. They cost £214 each. The discs are available in either drilled or slotted designs, both of which will aid dispersion of gas and brake dust. 11/12/09 - All wrapped up

DEi Protect-A-Wire sleeves are heat resistant flexible fabric tubes that easily slip over spark plug wires to protect them from damaging heat that could lead to engine mis-firing. The sleeves will withstand 250oC direct heat. They also contain a glass fibre material that increases electrical insulation to minimise the risk of cross-  firing at high revs.
They install easily on the wires by removing the distributor cap or plug connector and slipping on. DEi shrink tubes are included for secure water proof fitting and give the sleeve ends a sharp finished look.
Protect-A-Wire is especially useful on engines where the spark plugs are close to the exhaust manifold and have been tested on all types of engines. Protect-A-Wire is also suitable for any hose, wire or fuel line up to 10 mm diameter . Lohen are now stocking HKS exhaust systems which are engineered with performance, quality, and value as primary goals. This full cat-back system for the R56 Cooper S features dual round 85 mm tailpipes. The system has been designed to have a comfortable sound in the midrange with increased horsepower and torque. The mandrel pipe bending process offers consistent pipe diameter, eliminating crimps and kinks found in press bent production. This, in turn, gives less restriction and turbulence which increases exhaust flow velocity. 27/11/09 - Save £4 on Pipercross filters

By a Pipercross Gen 2 Cooper S filter for Christmas from Lohen and it’s only £30 - a saving of £4. This filter allows you to keep your standard air box in your Mini and will provide better breathing power, therefore some moderate performance gains can be had from installing this filter. A better engine response and a nicer engine sound are other noticeable benefits. The Gen1 Cooper S air box was designed so that the portion above and below the filter was very open. The Gen2 Cooper S air box is different, the lower portion of the standard Gen2 Cooper S filter has very little room for air to travel across the entire filter. This filter is slightly thinner and therefore removes some of this restriction. This simple change allows for more air to be drawn across the entire filter. Also, as a high flow foam filter, it provides less restriction, and the ability to clean it for the life of the car.

Gloucester-based Ajec Racing have introduced a unique new On-Line tuning service (FFSH - Full Filmed Service History).
Customers can now opt to watch their cars being re-mapped on the Dyno Dynamics rolling road via a live internet feed. This hi-tech option can also be extended to other work such as regular servicing. This all-seeing/time logged recording service means any customer with an internet connection can monitor their Mini on a minute-by-minute basis from anywhere in the world and see exactly what they are paying for.
Prices for mapping start at £350 (+VAT) for an off-the-shelf Dim Sport re-map, and the skilled technicians also offer a custom mapping service, on many after-market ECUs, right up to full race car mapping, including diesels. All mapping comes with before and after power graphs.

Pipe Exhausts have launched a 2.5 in stainless steel exhaust for the latest Mini Cooper S. The Cat-back system costs £385 +VAT, and if you want the matching downpipe and SportsCat, for extra performance gains, that will be an extra £350 + VAT. If you fit the full system then performance gains of around 14 bhp can be expected. This exhaust will still pass MOT emission tests. 29/09/09 - Full stop with AC Schnitzer

Those established German performance tuners, AC Schnitzer, have just launched a new brake conversion for the Cooper S which fits both the supercharged and current turbo versions. It consists of 4-pot callipers rather than the standard single-pot and 328 x 28 mm slotted  discs as replacements for the standard 294 x 22 mm non-slotted discs. According to their tests stopping distances at 100 kph are reduced from 37.1 m as standard to 35.5 m in cold conditions and from 38.2 down to 35.2 m under warmer conditions. The conversion kit also includes pads, brake pipes and calliper adaptor brackets.

Thermal management specialist Zircotec has developed what is believed to be the first ever flexible ceramic heat shield material. The new patent pending ZircoFlex offers a low-cost solution to the thermal protection of vital engine and electronic components as well as painted surfaces, increasing the durability and efficiency of the car, while protecting occupants from exposure to extreme heat. Zircoflex will be supplied in a roll, and is set to revolutionise the use of ceramic materials for heat protection in a wide range of automotive applications. It’s said to be able to reduce surface temps by up to 33 % - so handy if you are a Space Shuttle pilot entering the earth’s atmosphere when not driving your Mini. Millers Oils has launched a new range of petrol and diesel additives branded Ecomax. The unique blend of additives, which includes diesel cetane boosters and petrol octane boosters, have been developed to provide real power increases and fuel economy benefits whilst at the same time cleaning injectors to ensure optimum performance. Testing has shown that, in addition to reducing carbon emissions by up to 20 per cent, Diesel Power Ecomax and Petrol Ecomax can also improve fuel economy by up to 7 per cent. £342.50 buys you the latest offering from Scorpion exhausts -  a new system for the Mini Cooper S (from 06 onwards). The 2.5 in T304 stainless steel system utilises a free-flowing centre silencer and back box that allows far more efficient extraction balanced with just enough back-pressure to keep the turbo on song. 18/06/09 - Supercooling

The GRS Motorsport front mounted intercooler is now available from Lohen for £900. It’s been designed for a seriously tuned Cooper S as it has a much larger capacity than standard to provide more and colder air for the turbo and replaces the standard top-mounted version. The kit comes complete with all the fittings required for fitting and full instructions. Due to the size and location of this intercooler the air conditioning radiator (which sits in front of the water radiator) will need to be removed and the system drained of gas. The plastic panel above the radiator will need to be modified and some material will have to be removed from the scoop area on the bonnet.

Pipercross have launched an induction kit for the R56 Cooper S.

Fabricated in the UK, the kit features a spun aluminium neck and optimised cold-air feed to drastically improve air flow into the 1.6 litre engine. This fit-to-CAT system costs £425 and is made from aircraft-spec stainless steel, which is mandrel bent for maximum gas flow and then everything is polished to a mirror finish. Ramair have launched a new Carbon Max cold air induction system for the R53 Mini Cooper S. It costs £119.99 and comes with full fitting instructions so you can fit it yourself.  The kit consists of cold air ducting, mounting bracket and that all-important Ramair Aeriform foam filter encased in a carbon fibre effect housing. It’s a direct replacement for the standard and rather restrictive Cooper S airbox. Ramair’s Carbon Max kit supplies the engine with a greater volume of air (and oxygen) needed to boost the maximum power and torque output, while at the same time ensuring the supercharged engine remains totally protected against debris ingestion during road use. According to Vecchio Engineering the brakes on a Mini Cooper S are a bit of a weak link. They have recently put together a package to solve that problem; this brake setup improves bite and protects against brake fading under high temperatures. Their kit includes Ferodo DS brake pads, Tarox G88 or Sport Japan brake discs, a Goodridge stainless steel braided brake line kit and some Castrol SRF racing brake fluid. This complete kit costs £489.

15/04/09 - The right spark

Vecchio Engineering are now stocking LiveWires ignition lead sets for £69. They say they are one of the best sets of leads available for Minis. They are covered in heat resistant sleeving to protect the inner wires, and that coating is also non-flamable and resists chemicals. Heat shrink applied between the boot and the sleeving keeps dirt and moisture away from wire terminals. Swivel boots are easy to work with. LiveWires spiral wound core prevents electronic interference so there’s no radio noise or computer interference and they work with delay boxes and stutter boxes. They offer extremely low resistance of 300 - 350 Ohms per foot for optimum spark travel.

Graham Goode Racing have developed a more effective cold air induction system for the Mini R56 Cooper S. It consists of a spun aluminium outer casing, large cone K&N filter element, and a spun aluminium bell-mouth assembly, all finished in a vibrant red hammer finish. The whole assembly sits on the original airbox mounting points, for ease of fit. Cold air is picked up from the original position in the bonnet slam panel, and feeds directly into the turbo inlet through custom made black silicone hoses. It costs £402.49

Mini Madness can now offer 2 tuning packages for the R56 Mini. The Stage 1 kit includes a Milltek exhaust, Madness poly engine mounts and a high flow air filter and should combine to produce 200 bhp @ the flywheel. The Stage 2 option includes all the the Stage 1 items plus their intercooler air flow diverter and Madness software tuning which help to increase the power to an impressive 225 bhp.

25/03/09 - Madness get even cooler

Do Mini Madness ever stop dreaming up new products? We hope not. This time they have turned their attention to the R56 Cooper and a weakness they have spotted with the front-mounted intercooler. They realised that airflow was restricted by the bumper so have designed an air flow diverter to channel the air more effectively straight to the intercooler. Results were impressive, improving airflow by almost 50 per cent over standard, but they went even further by adding dual water spray heads onto the diverter. Fed by the rear wiper water supply, these are a nice addition to helping to keep the intercooler cooler and running more effectively.

25/03/09 - Madness stay firm

According to Mini Madness, what the Cooper S lacks is uprated engine bushes, so they have designed a set of uprated poly bushes which reduce engine and transmission movement. They say it allows a smoother flow of power to the wheels which helps to prevent wheel spin and, with less movement on the gear shift cables, gear changes will be smoother. They also say it has a beneficial effect on other parts of the engine such as the exhaust. The kit consists of two bushes and apparently only takes 15 minutes to fit. It’s certainly something to consider if your engine is tuned above standard.

Spend £449.99 (+VAT)  and you could get your hands on a new stainless steel backbox from the Spax Supersport range of exhausts, specially designed for the Cooper S. It’s a direct replacement for the standard system, comes with a 3 year warranty, which stays with the car, even if your sell it, and is available  with a choice of 47 tail pipe options so you can be as individual as you like. Supersport say that although the exhaust provides a deeper note than standard  it doesn’t exceed 92db and it won’t be annoying at low speed or with a light throttle. The exhausts are manufactured in Germany and come with full TUV and EU approval.

25/03/09 - On the pull

According to research from Mini Madness, swapping the standard Supercharger pulley on a Cooper S for one of their smaller versions can increase engine performance by up to 20bhp , with a matching improvement in torque. Their pulley is 15 per cent smaller than standard and, in the care of pulleys, smaller is better and it makes the charger run faster and generate more boost. They also offer a 19 per cent smaller version which makes the boost kick in 750rpm earlier than the 15 per cent version. It’s fabricated from aircraft-spec alluminium and designed for easy installation. It’s also been anodised black, so only you will know it’s been fitted – it’s a stealth thing! If fitting this product they also suggest upgrading to cooler-running spark plugs to reduce the chance of detonation caused by running more boost pressure.

25/03/09 - Cool news from Lohen

Lohen now stocks the latest Gen 2 Cooper S front-mounted intercooler from Forge Motorsport. It’s larger than the standard item and helps to reduce intake temperatures, which eventually leads to more power. The intercooler has a surface area that’s 250 per cent larger than standard and tests have shown a reduction of intake temperatures of 9oC, and that’s at just normal road speed. The difference would be even greater at higher, or even track, speeds. The intercooler comes complete with all the mountings required, plus full fitting instructions and even a replacement lower grille. It costs £470 (including VAT)

16/03/09 - Forging ahead

Forge Motorsport have several new products for the R36 Mini. Their induction kit for the Cooper S replaces the original filter and air box to improve the engine’s breathing and costs £171.35. 

Sticking with the Cooper S they have also designed a front undertray which apart from increasing the ground force, and therefore improving road holding, is also useful for engine and gearbox protection for those minor off-road moments.Cost: £154.10

Adding some bling under the bonnet of Cooper S (07 onwards) is the Forge alloy header tank which is a direct replacement and uses the original mountings and filler cap. It costs £181.12.

More under-bonnet bling, but with an ulterior purpose, is the Forge alloy strut brace, designed to look good and improve handling a the same time. Cost: £138. All products are available from any Forge stockist.

16/03/09 - Improved lightweight flywheel

Does your Cooper S feel a bit sluggish? If so, TTV Racing Components have the solution; a one-piece ‘race-spec’ lightweight flywheel machined from Billet Chrome Moly Steel. Their new creation tips the scales at just under 5 Kg, compared to the standard wheel which weights in at a lardy 12 Kg. TTV Racing say it transforms driving the Cooper with faster acceleration, quicker gear changes and improved engine response. And as if those weren’t  good enough reasons, they also say that a side-effect of fitting the lightened flywheel is a fuel saving of up to 10%, which makes it very tempting indeed. They suggest matching it with an uprated clutch to really reap the benefits.

16/03/09 - Gain 5 bhp in just 5 minutes

Gotta John Cooper Works Mini? Lucky you! However those clever guys at Mini-Madness have spotted a design flaw and successfully plugged it. They point out that the optional JCW Cooper S airbox is not fitted with a high performance air filter, but with a paper element which is restrictive and significantly reduces aiflow. And we don’t want that. They have designed and manufactured a direct replacement air filter (duel cone velocity stack) which provides a much higher flow of air through the intake system. It only takes 5 minutes to fit and because it can be cleaned and then used again works out a lot more cost effective than the standard item.

Their kit includes the filter, obviously, full fitting instructions (whatever that means) and some other tips on improving the standard airflow. Customers who have posted reviews on their site have been really raving about the performance improvements.
